Abstract
A system-model for computer-aided densitometric evaluation of focal spot images of diagnostic x-ray tubes is described. The procedure is almost fully automated. It extracts a specified number of optical density profiles from the focal spat image and computes the area, the base-width and the full width at half maximum for each profile. The Fourier-transform of selected profiles, the isodensity contour diagram and a three-dimensional display of the focal spot image are also rendered. Such complex assessment is recommended primarily for microfocal spots. Since the proposed evaluation requires both costly equipment and sophisticated computer programs, which are beyond the reach of most hospital facilities, it is suggested that an organization should be set up at which the analysis could be done at modest costs.
