The already existing forward proton detectors are considered in the context of the heavy ion collisions. The potential of such detectors in measuring the nuclear debris originating from de-excitation of colliding ions is presented. The apparatus geometric acceptance for different nuclei is studied. Also, the influence of the Fermi motion and experimental conditions is considered. A possibility of the reconstructing of collision the impact parameter from the measurement of the nuclear fragments is discussed.
