Abstract
Algorithms involving ranking are used to suppress noise induced in IR detectors by gamma radiation, based on enhanced response to gamma photons relative to other excitation. An analytic expression for the characteristic function of detector response to signal plus Gaussian noise plus gamma noise is derived; it is used to compute second moments of order statistics corresponding to ranked groups of redundant detector samples of an image pixel. These are used to illustrate a simple method of 'quantifying noise-suppression potential of simple ranking algorithms, as a function of gamma noise and ranking parameters. Ranking suppresses noise from all sources, and selection of low-order ranked data yields substantial SNR gain when the probability of one gamma photon per detector sample approaches 1.0.
