Abstract
A methodology for using Landsat TM images from different imaging dates for mapping European forest ecosystems is described. The methodology has been applied to a forested area in central Ireland. The multi-date images are first corrected for the effects of varying sun position, topography and atmospheric conditions. The imagery is classified using a database of pre-established spectral-phenological profiles for the different forest types. Classification accuracy compares favorably with existing ground inventory data. The radiometric correction successfully reduces variation in the spectral signatures caused by changes in topography and atmospheric conditions. This research is being carried out as part of the FIRS (forest information for remote sensing) program at the Joint Research Centre, Ispra.
