Abstract
The goal of this research project was the development of visualization techniques in order to help the facial surgeon to control the geometric alterations attained by his operation. The visualization technique presented in this paper is based on two three-dimensional models of the patient's face: a preoperative model and a postoperative model. For comparison these two models are fitted to one another at the unchanged parts of the face. With the help of stereo photogrammetry surface models of the face are obtained. Skeleton models are generated from computer tomography applying three-dimensional image processing routines. Using control features the postoperative model is transformed to the preoperative one. These features may be represented by points or free-formed spatial curves. The superimposition of the pre- and the postoperative model enable diagnosis and quality control. For proper three-dimensional interpretation various interactive visualization applications, based on the program systems AVS and IDL, were developed.
