Abstract
Rare-earth doped optical fibres have received considerable attention in recent years because of their important application as in-line optical amplifiers and fibre lasers. In particular, fibre lasers are attractive as miniature, efficient and temperature-stable sources for sensors and communication applications. In the case of sensors there has been recent interest in the development of tunable fibre lasers for spectroscopic gas detection in the near IR [1].
