Abstract
The visual pattern image coding (VPIC) technique appears to be a powerful competitor to VQ approaches for image coding since no codebook is needed. In VPIC, edge patterns within 4 by 4 blocks are detected and preserved. We report on the results of an alternative edge-preserving lossy compression algorithm that employs an edge-detection operator for identifying edge pixels for special treatment. A combination of the zero-tree approach of subband coding and the deterministic prediction approach of JBIG identified blocks without edge pixels. Predictive coding is heavily employed in compressing the block mean values. A smoothing algorithm is applied to the means of the 4 by 4 blocks that serves the dual purpose of predicting whether an edge pixel value is above or below the mean.
