Abstract
Offering broadband services to residential users will in most cases mean using ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) based shared medium access networks which concentrate the users' traffic in the upstream direction (from the users' terminals towards the public network). Both HFC (hybrid fiber coax) and PON (passive optical network) based solutions need a medium access control (MAC) in order to schedule the upstream traffic merged from different users. Several approaches for MAC protocols have been published by researchers, research projects, and also the IEEE P802.14 draft working group. These different MAC protocols are compared in this paper with respect to the suitability of different mechanisms for the resource management needed by the different ATM traffic classes. A new approach to ATM access networks, integrating all traffic classes by using appropriate MAC mechanisms in the access network while still maintaining overall efficiency, is proposed. The optimum resource management strategy inside the network termination units (MAC endpoints) is shown as the result of a discussion of the different options which still allow for the targeted efficiency.
