Abstract
Interest by the Armed Forces in Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) is at its highest point ever. The concepts, prototypes, and user appraisals that the Joint Robotics Program (JRP) has generated over the last decade are finally coming to fruition as all four Services are including UGVs in their transformation planning. The mission of the congressionally-directed JRP is to research, develop, acquire and field UGV systems for the United States Armed Forces. The program is structured to field first generation systems, mature promising technologies and then upgrade capabilities by means of an evolutionary strategy. In the near term, acquisition programs emphasize teleoperation over diverse terrain, more autonomous functioning for structured environments, and extensive opportunities for users to operate UGVs. In the far term, the JRP and the Army jointly sponsor a tech base effort (Demo III and Intelligent Mobility programs) for autonomous mobility in unstructured environments. Last October, the Demo III program held a highly successful demonstration of autonomous mobility at Fort Indiantown Gap, PA. This demonstration featured several Experimental Unmanned Vehicles (XUVs) operating semi-autonomously and cooperatively over challenging and diverse terrain. Additionally, the JRP has initiated a Joint Architecture for Unmanned Ground Systems (JAUGS) to enable component interoperability and technology insertion. The author will update the conference on recent activities by the JRP, as well as other related Department of Defense ground robotics programs.
