Abstract
Ground state copper vapour number density, sputtered from the cathode of an experimental pseudospark switch is measured in the main gap region, using laser-influenced fluorescence (LIF) from the copper transition 42P3/2-42D5/2 at 510.55 nm. The presented results are for pre-breakdown duration of 5 μs and lie in the range 4.5•1016-6•1017 m-3. The density is determined from the LIF signal by using both its maximum and integral. This approach follows from an otherwise familiar LIF model, which is examined in detail to reveal an unnoticed feature, namely the possibility to obtain an estimate of the lifetime of the laser excited level. A comparison between this estimate and the lifetime, measured from the exponential decay of the LIF signal reveals a good agreement.
