Abstract
Originally developed to ameliorate image quality, aplanatic optics were only recently analyzed as maximumperformance light-transfer systems with concentration approaching the fundamental limit. A basic categorization scheme is presented that appears to cover the full spectrum of aplanatic designs, illustrated for far-field dual-mirror concentrators and motivated by high-irradiance solar applications. Several previously unrecognized classes of concentrators are identified.
