Abstract
A new concave semi-cylindrical holographic stereogram format, called the "alcove" hologram, offers 3-D real images that project to the viewer's fingertips with an angle of view of nearly 180 degrees. The hologram is area-multiplexed in a way that is extendable to large holograms that can be quickly and automatically produced, perhaps by a computer peripheral "3-D hard copy" device. In order to produce undistorted images, the input images must be intensively processed, or derived from a digital data base, so that the method for hologram production is particularly suited to a digital imaging and design environment.
