Abstract
This chapter provides a high-level overview of the topics discussed in Chapters 2 through 10. Chapter 2 provides readers with information on the fundamentals of piezoelectricity, ultrasound, and fabrication strategies for ultrasound transducers. Chapter 3 describes the use of diagnostic ultrasound for neurosurgical applications. Then, the applications of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) in neurosurgery are discussed (Chapter 4). The use of intraoperative ultrasound in neurosurgery and foreign body detection is then described (Chapter 5). Chapter 6 discusses the use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging for neurosurgical applications. Chapter 7 describes the applications of ultrasound elastography for potential applications in neurosurgery. The interaction between bone and ultrasound, as it pertains to neurosurgical applications is then provided (Chapter 8). Chapter 9 provides a short discussion on up-and-coming applications of ultrasound for neurosurgical procedures. The book concludes with a discussion of the ethics involved in ultrasound technologies moving forward, as they reach their potentials (Chapter 10).
