The effect of thermal defocusing of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser beam focused in a water cell is observed by a shutter video camera as a function of the position in the cell and the time during the laser pulse. In a first case the laser beam is directly focused into the water. In a second experiment the beam is coupled into a multimode fiber and the fiber output focused into the cell. A theoretical model is proposed explaining the observed phenomena. The simulation shows results that are in very good agreement with the measured values.
