Abstract

The use of the laser in general surgery is slightly over ten years. Many advances have been made during this time, but many more are needed. In order to understand the poor acceptance of the laser by general surgeons to this period of time, one must first understand the characteristics of the surgeon. Most surgeons are very conservative people, doing surgery only when nothing else will work. Secondly, surgeons are trained to feel the incision or the pressure of the knife and to see the sharp, nice dissection being done and the tissues parting. In addition, he feels a certain amount of insecurity if he is using a device where he's not exactly sure of the depth of the cut. Certainly, new types of lasers will aid the general surgeon to better understand and to use the C02 and other lasers and may eventually give them reason to accept it as a definite modality in surgery.
