Abstract
Recent advances in multiprocessor techniques and high speed memory have provided the basis for new computer architectures and real-time processing. This paper will describe some special hardware implemented in a real-time vision system, and detailing real-time processing of raster algorithms in concert with a linear sensor output. The algorithms and computer architecture considerations are detailed and justified. The application of the research project details the hardware and software that are necessary to process image pixels in less than 100 nano seconds. As a result of real-time processing, a certain "intelligence" is brought to the effort in the form of object identification. During object segmentation, algorithms provide a scoring procedure which identifies features within the image. The effort is supported in part by the Army Research Office, National Science Foundation and the Earth Technology Corporation.
