Abstract
This paper discusses the range-performance benefit of high-frequency boost and local-area contrast enhancement (LACE). Boost corrects for diffraction blur and other imager blurs that degrade the high-frequency content of imagery. LACE reduces the dynamic range of scene content and results in better use of display gray scale. In some cases, the target acquisition range of state-of-the-art thermal imagers is doubled. However, the effectiveness of image processing depends on the signal to noise and sampling properties of the imager. Range performance is predicted using the NVThermIP** thermal model; model application and limitations are discussed.
