Abstract
Effective magnetic permeability is investigated theoretically as well as experimentally for stratified metal dielectric metamaterial consisting of alumina (60nm) /Ag (30nm) /alumina (60nm) unit cells. The permeability calculated from complex transmission and reflection coefficients with the transfer matrix amounts to 20 just below the first photonic bandgap. Measurements with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer were found to be consistent with theoretical prediction.
