Abstract
This paper describes an approach to measuring internal displacements and strains in metals. The technique has the advantage over optical surface strain measurement techniques in that internal information is obtained. The principle is to use an ultrasonic array to record images of the speckle pattern produced by the material microstructure before and after the application of load. A cross-correlation algorithm is then used to determine the relative displacement of portions of the images between the two load states, and hence the strain field. The mathematical basis of the technique is summarized, and experimental results are presented. The results demonstrate that the technique can be used for example to measure the onset of plasticity and non-uniform strain fields deep in a material.
