26 June 1998 New CT scanning approach for decreasing radiation doses

Abstract
In recent years, CT fluoroscopy has been used for interventional procedures like needle biopsy, micro coil implantation for preoperative marking, and the guidance during ethanol injection. It takes about from 30sec to more than 60sec in those procedures. The radiation dose to a patient and a physician's hands has increased relatively to the general CT examination. And a patient would have to be exposed to a relatively large amount of x-rays even if it was desired to display only local region of interest. We have studied the local scan which limits an exposure field to avoid unnecessary x-ray, and have performed the basic experiments of the local scan using commercial scanner to compare the radiation dose with the conventional scan. And the absorbed dose estimation by the computer simulation was presented. It was proved quantitatively that the local measurements could significantly reduce the radiation dose. We have proposed a simple algorithm to recover the discontinuity of the locally measured data. It was shown that the artifacts caused by the boundaries of the exposure field can be eliminated by the algorithm.
