Abstract
Influence of the atmosphere on airborne coherent optical communications is analyzed and compared to space-borne transmission. An experiment that was performed to evaluate important system parameters for coherent atmospheric communication is described. Measurement results are presented which show that in this experiment the spectral densities of angle-of-arrival fluctuations and received power were similar to fluctuations observed in a satellite system due to mechanical vibration. In addition, the possibility to use such a set-up to test and optimize PAT subsystems as well as receiver electronics and optics under far-field conditions is discussed.
