Abstract
Ensuring the quality and accuracy of AR, VR, and MR displays requires precise measurement and qualification. Because these HMDs (head-mounted displays) fill a significant portion of the eye’s field of view (FOV), (typically 10-50 degrees for AR and 100-120 degrees for VR) minor defects and irregularities can be observed by a device user, potentially interfering with functionality and user experience. The available equipment on the market for testing AR/VR/MR displays may be similar, however, optical differences between AR/MR and VR systems require unique setups of test equipment to ensure that measurement and qualification will replicate the human visual experience. This paper provides a brief overview of display metrology requirements common to all types of AR/MR/VR displays and looks particularly at the unique requirements of testing AR and MR displays. For example, AR devices typically have a narrower FOV than immersive VR display headsets, and AR/MR virtual images are often (with optical see-through devices) projected onto a transparent surface with the background environment still visible to a user, making brightness and the resulting contrast critical performance parameters of the display. Topics covered in this paper include: unique optical configurations, performance parameters and usage environments specific to AR/MR devices; how to address the challenges of AR/MR display testing; specifications of photometric/colorimetric imaging systems (such as imaging resolution) used to measure and qualify AR/VR/MR displays. The paper also includes a discussion of recent research into testing new types of AR optical architectures.
