Abstract
Sprites occur in the mesosphere as the result of intense cloud-to-ground tropospheric discharges, giving us the opportunity to parameterize the relation of lightning discharges and sprites. A study of sprites over the territory of Russia was carried out using the global parameterization proposed earlier by the authors and data of the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) on lightning discharges with a peak current exceeding 15 kA for 2015-2021. The annual number of such discharges averages about 6.2∙105 varies from 3.5∙105 in 2019 to 7.5∙105 in 2015. As a result of applying the original parameterization, it was found that the average annual number of sprites over Russia is about 1187 and significantly varies from 394 in 2019 to 2354 in 2015. The most intense sprite activity almost always occurs in July, but in some years a shift to June (2015) and August (2021) is possible. The highest number of sprites occurs mainly in three regions: Krasnodar area, Altai, and Far East. While Altai shows the most consistent sprite activity from year to year, the variability in the Krasnodar region is the highest.
