Abstract
In view of the irrational mining and low safety associated with joint mining in close distance coal seams, the rational staggered distance between working faces of the upper and lower coal seams during joint mining in close distance coal seams is explored in the geological context of coal 12 and 13upper in Jinbao Coal Mine, Northwest China. Stable pressure zone (SPZ) mining and reduced pressure zone (RPZ) mining are studied using theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. Through calculations for SPZ mining and RPZ mining, it is determined that for joint mining in close distance coal seams, the safe staggered distance between working faces is 25.93–31.93 m. Numerical simulation of SPZ and RPZ mining methods based on Universal Distant Element Code (UDEC) shows that 25–45 m is the rational staggered distance between joint mining faces in close distance coal seams and it guarantees high mining safety. The numerical simulation result is basically consistent with theoretical analysis. This finding can provide useful reference for mining operation in coal seams with similar geological conditions.
