Abstract
A new form of terrestrial non-line-of-sight (NLOS) optical communication can be provided based on laser diffusion. For an intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) communication system employing a light source with low duty cycle and high peak power, the relationships among bit error rate (BER) and transmission distance, receiving distance, reflection angle, and atmospheric conditions are investigated. The BER contours of terrestrial laser diffusion communication are revealed, and the performance requirements for the light source and detector of a laser diffusion communication system are proposed.
