Abstract
In the far infrared, superlattice dielectric functions can be well represented using an effective mediummodel, with the overall symmetry of the superlattice taking a uniaxial form. If only phonon effects areconsidered, superlattice dielectric tensors are usefully modelled in one of two ways, dependent on thethicknesses of the superlattice layers. Thus in long period superlattices the phonon resonances aredetermined by the bulk resonances of the constituent layers, whereas in short period superlattices theresonances are shifted from their bulk values due to phonon confinement.
