Abstract
The Institute of Photogrammetry of Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne has developed the multi-templet-matching algorithm for the completely automatic derivation of a digital terrain model from large scale aerial photographs. This algorithm has now been implemented on the Leica DPW 750 by Helava, a stereoscopic digital photogrammetric workstation based on a SPARCstation 2 host and VITec image computer. The matching algorithm encompasses the determination of break lines, the approximation of the terrain by finite elements, and the filtering of obstacles. The matching is flexible enough to model houses and other terrain obstacles. This terrain noise is automatically filtered at a later stage in order to obtain the terrain structure itself. The article gives a detailed precision analysis of the technique including also the matching algorithm of Helava.
