Abstract
This paper addresses the issue of maintaining multiple representation geodata bases. Automatic generalization processes are not sufficient today for making the generalization process fully automatic. Therefore, multiple representations of the same geographical objects have to be stored in the geodata base. The challenge we then have, is to find a flexible data model which would make it possible to realize the multiple representations in geodata bases. In practice it is necessary to make updates due to changes in reality to the geodata base. In this work we study under what conditions these updates on the base level could be propagated to the other representation levels in real time. The propagation of updates is called here incremental generalization. Automatic incremental generalization would make the generalization process, in a multiple representation environment, automatic. Incremental generalization demands that the problem can be divided into modules. The central problem we then have is, how to find the border line for the module. This means that the set of conflicting objects should be defined in the multiple representation database.
