Abstract
This paper addresses both the adaptation to medical image of the JPEG base-line system by optimizing the normalization array and Huffman tables and its extension by adaptation of the block size to the image correlation lengths. Adaptation of the JPEG algorithm to each medical image or modality results in a significant improvement of the decompressed image quality with a low excess of computing cost.
