14 July 1999 CAMEVA: a methodology for computerized evaluation of camouflage effectiveness and estimation of target detectability

Abstract
CAMEVA is a methodology developed at the Danish Defence Research Establishment (DDRE) for computerized CAMouflage EVAluation. Input is a single image comprising a highly resolved target as well as a proper amount of background. Based on that, CAMEVA predicts the target detectability as a function of range. Statistical distributions of features utilized during the perception process are extracted and the Bhattacharyaa distance measure is applied to estimate the relative separation between the target and the background. The absolute detection range is obtained by establishing a relation between the Bhattacharyaa distance and the target resolution. Thus by introducing parameters of the sensor, i.e. the human unaided eye, detectability as a function of the range is obtained. Theoretical aspects of CAMEVA are discussed and validation examples are shown.
