Abstract

The characteristics of incoherent light sources affecting reproduction of a holographic image is never found in lamp manufacturer's literature on their product. The lamp characteristics that manufacturers list, such as light intensity, illuminant values, beam angles, and etc. But, these values are no relation with the reproduced image characteristics of a hologram. For a reflection type holography such as Lippmann holography, an incoherent light source, frequently a halogen or incandescent lamp, used to reconstruct the image. This report concerns how to measure the reproducible characteristics for these lamps. These lamps are evaluated by using deep or protruded image reproduction of the hologram. This hologram was of a test-chart located several millimeters under a film. When the hologram is viewed, the most desirable light source is the best resolution of the test chart. This lighting position was investigated by ray tracing, locating a pin hole on front of the lamp. As a result, light rays had no intersection. Where intersecting rays existed, the resolution of the image was the worst.
