Abstract
Fiber optic gyros make use of the Sagnac-effect for rotation rate measurement. Two counterpropagating light beams travelling through a coil with length L and diameter D experience a phase shift 2ΔΦ which is given by (1) 2ΔΦ 2LD Ω λ= wavelength c = velocity of light Ω = angular velocity This phase shift can be detected with a 'phase-nulling scheme' or by direct detection /1/. The direct detection has the advantage of an uncomplicated optical set-up (Fig. 1, /2/), but the signal detection raises some problems. By using an analogue system the linearity and the dynamic range are subject to severe limitations. To overcome these problems we use a digital signal detection scheme.
