Abstract
At present, automatic detection and topology management of network device are hotspots in network device management field. The new devices of many manufacturers have such functions. But the realization of these functions on devices is based on private protocols of their own manufacturer, and cannot cooperate with each other in the network.This article presents a GARP based network Device and Topology Registration Protocol. This protocol is based on GARP protocol defined in IEEE802.1D, and the registered attributes are network device identity and topology information. This protocol packet carries network devices’ identity and topology registration information, and spreads them within the local area network. Each Participant sends Join and Leave packets, spreading network device and topology information in the connected network. During the process, each participant can automatically detect the network device information and topology information in the network and monitoring their states’ change in real time.This article defines the frame format of GDTRP packets and the information carried on each bit, including network device information (such as device type, manufacturer, IP address, MAC address and etc.) and the link state information (topology) of network devices. It also expatiates how network devices quickly detect other devices in the same network and establish their topology according to the spreading GNDRP protocol packets.Since GDTRP protocol defined in this article is based on generic GARP protocol defined by IEEE, it provides a good scheme to solve the inter-linkage problem of network devices from different manufacturers.
