Abstract
Region system is an open complex system. "Digital region", as the virtual reflection of the physical region system, is also an open complex system. It is necessary to study the digital region from the perspective of the region system. This paper investigates the concept and nature of the digital region and its relationship with the region system form the perspective of the region system and open complex system. Region system is a representative "Open complex giant system" and digital region is one special subsystem of region system and also a representative "Open complex giant system". "Digital region" is the outcome of the evolution of the self-organize of the region system. Just as the evolution of the region system, the digital region system is a self-organize system. The evolution of the digital region is dominated by the evolution of the region system and the information and communication technologies. Digital region exhibits the characteristic of "Open complex giant socio-technological" and not only a region spatial information system and the related technological system of region networked computer networks but also the communicating actors. The ultimate aim of the region system and the digital region is to support the region sustainable development.
