5 February 2009 High-performance heat sink for solid-state lighting

Abstract
We report on a novel high-performance active heat sink (AHS) offering unparalleled capacity in high-heat flux handling, heat spreading, and temperature control. AHS couples directly to standard high-brightness light emitting diodes (LED) packages. It efficiently removes high-flux waste heat from the LED slug and transfers it to ambient air. AHS has variable thermal conductance that can be electronically adjusted to compensate for changes in ambient temperatures or to adjust the light color. This paper presents AHS physics, engineering design, and results from numerical simulations. Applications to screw-in replacements for the R30 lamp are discussed.
