WS506: International Workshop on Nanotechnology of Polymeric Smart Material
This workshop will address polymer-based materials research for smart skin applications including dendrimers for smart materials applications, nanoscale tailoring of electro-optic materials, pi electron organic materials, polymeric nanophotonics and nanoelectronics, carbon nanotubes, and polymeric nanocomposites.
WS652: Educational Outreach - Light, Lasers and Optics for Grades K-12
This course provides attendees with an overview of light, lasers and optics. Light, lasers and optics technologies are growing very fast and are becoming more and more invaluable everyday. From the check out counter at the local grocery store to medical surgery, from talking on the telephone to welding and cutting steel, from recording and watching home video to seeing with your eyes, light, lasers and optics are a major part of everyday life. This course will present a hands-on approach to giving students in Kindergarten through High School a conceptual understanding of light, lasers and optics and how to use them. Subjects will be presented that will make teaching and learning about light, lasers and optics fun and will spark student interest. Topics covered will include: Light - What is light? How do we see light? Speed of light? Refraction (bending) of light, and Colors of light-ultraviolet-visible-infrared. Lasers - What are lasers? How do lasers work? What can lasers be used for? Optics - What is optics? Lenses, Mirrors and Fiber Optics. Specific Applications of laser scanning and optical fiber communication will be presented.
