An improved differential evolution algorithm for structural optimization design

Meta-heuristic algorithms are effective methods for solving structural optimization problems. Among these meta- heuristic algorithms, Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm is a widely used global optimization method. In the process of searching for the optimal solution, the global search is carried out at the beginning. However, when the target is locked in a small range later, if the global search is still carried out, the speed of the program will be reduced, and the computational cost will be increased. In this paper, an improved DE algorithm is proposed, which adds dynamic control means into the evolutionary computation, and adjusts global and local search, so that the search ability and running speed of the algorithm are greatly improved. Applying this method to the optimization design of a tower structure, the lightest structure is obtained. It is also better than Genetic Algorithm (GA) in the effect of reducing structural weight. The optimization of the structure by applying this method proves the feasibility and effectiveness of this dynamic control strategy.
