Due to the evolution of code and modulation technology, terrestrial terminal equipment (TTE) of submarine cable system can be rapidly updated, but submerged equipment need to work for lifetime of 25 years, based on this background, the concept of Open Cable is proposed, that is, the TTE and submerged equipment of submarine system are decoupled. Open cable is no longer characterized with Q factor from TTE, the new parameter generalized OSNR/SNR (GOSNR/GSNR) which contains both linear and nonlinear factors has been formally proposed to characterize the open cable system. Meanwhile, the analysis method based on GN theory model is proved to be able to evaluate the chromatic dispersion unmanaged system performance well. However, one assumption of GN model is that the nonlinear noise of the system behaves like Gaussian noise, which requires that the length of the system is enough so the chromatic dispersion is large enough. Considering the undersea DWDM actual application scenarios, the length of submarine repeatered system is generally more than 580km, less than this distance repeaterless transmission can be adopted [1]. This paper introduces the GN model theory calculation method and acceptance test method, and then validates a study on the applicable distance scope of GN model to repeatered open cable system.
