Raytheon’s fourth generation uncooled microbolometer array technology with digital output, High Definition (HD) 1920 × 1200 format and 12 μm cell size enables uncooled thermal infrared (TIR) multispectral imagers with the sensitivity and spatial sampling needed for a variety of Earth observation missions in LEO, GEO and HEO. A powerful combination of small detector cell size, fast optics and high sensitivity achieved without cryogenic cooling leads to instruments that are much smaller than current TIR systems, while still offering the capability to meet challenging measurement requirements for Earth observation missions. To consider how this technology could be implemented for Earth observation missions, we extend our previous studies with visible wavelength CubeSat imagers for environmental observations from LEO and examine whether small thermal infrared imagers based on fourth generation uncooled technology could be made small enough to fit onboard a 3U CubeSat and still meet challenging requirements for legacy missions. We found that moderate spatial resolution (~200 m) high sensitivity cloud and surface temperature observations meeting legacy MODIS/VIIRS requirements could be collected successfully with CubeSat-sized imagers but that multiple imagers are needed to cover the full swath for these missions. Higher spatial resolution land imagers are more challenging to fit into the CubeSat form factor, but it may be possible to do so for systems that require roughly 100 m spatial resolution. Regardless of whether it can fit into a CubeSat or not, uncooled land imagers meeting candidate TIR requirements can be implemented with a much smaller instrument than previous imagers. Even though this technology appears to be very promising, more work is needed to qualify this newly available uncooled infrared technology for use in space. If these new devices prove to be as space worthy as the first generation arrays that Raytheon qualified and built into the THEMIS imager still operating successfully onboard Mars Odyssey 2001, new classes of low cost, uncooled TIR Earth instruments will be enabled that are suitable for use as primary and hosted payloads in LEO, GEO and HEO or in constellations of small satellites as small as CubeSats to support Earth science measurement objectives in weather forecasting, land imaging and climate variability and change.

The Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is the next-generation imaging spectroradiometer for the NOAA/NASA Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS). Flight unit 1 (F1) was successfully launched onboard the Suomi NPP spacecraft in 2011. Measured performance shows that VIIRS F1 offers important new capabilities for a wide range of weather and Earth science applications. VIIRS replaces four different sensors with a single instrument built into a flight proven rotating telescope scene scanning architecture first used in the highly successful SeaWiFS ocean color imager starting in the 1990s. This flexible VIIRS architecture can be adapted and enhanced to respond to a wide range of requirements and to incorporate new technology as it becomes available. Possible VIIRS improvements include adding water vapor and temperature sounding bands, improving spatial resolution near nadir by transmitting all unaggregated data to Earth thus avoiding aggregation of saturated or corrupted pixels with good measurements and improving sensitivity especially at the longest wavelength bands by replacing the passive radiative cooler with an active mechanical cooler. This paper extends previous work that showed that the VIIRS design can accommodate adding three water vapor bands by describing an even simpler modification to VIIRS that would involve replacing one of the current VIIRS spectral bands with a single water vapor band. Two cases are considered. The first involves replacing a redundant spectral filter and associated microlenses for the VIIRS M16 band at 12.0 μm with a water vapor band filter and microlenses based on MODIS Band 27 (MB27) at 6.7 μm, while making no changes to the detector material or ROIC. The second case involves making the same spectral filter and microlens replacements, while also improving optimization of the detector material and ROIC for operation at MB27. Expected radiometric sensitivity performance of MB27 in VIIRS is excellent in both cases and compares favorably with flight performance in the corresponding band operating today in MODIS for the optimized performance case.

The Visible/Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is the next-generation imaging spectroradiometer for the future operational polar-orbiting environmental satellite system. A successful Flight Unit 1 has been delivered and integrated onto the NPP spacecraft. The flexible VIIRS architecture can be adapted and enhanced to respond to a wide range of requirements and to incorporate new technology as it becomes available. This paper reports on recent design studies to evaluate building a MW-VLWIR dispersive hyperspectral module with active cooling into the existing VIIRS architecture. Performance of a two-grating VIIRS hyperspectral module was studied across a broad trade space defined primarily by spatial sampling, spectral range, spectral sampling interval, along-track field of view and integration time. The hyperspectral module studied here provides contiguous coverage across 3.9 - 15.5 μm with a spectral sampling interval of 10 nm or better, thereby extending VIIRS spectral range to the shortwave side of the 15.5 μm CO₂ band and encompassing the 6.7 μm H₂O band. Spatial sampling occurs at VIIRS I-band (~0.4 km at nadir) spatial resolution with aggregation to M-band (~0.8 km) and larger pixel sizes to improve sensitivity. Radiometric sensitivity (NEdT) at a spatial resolution of ~4 km is ~0.1 K or better for a 250 K scene across a wavelength range of 4.5 μm to 15.5 μm. The large number of high spectral and spatial resolution FOVs in this instrument improves chances for retrievals of information on the physical state and composition of the atmosphere all the way to the surface in cloudy regions relative to current systems. Spectral aggregation of spatial resolution measurements to MODIS and VIIRS multispectral bands would continue legacy measurements with better sensitivity in nearly all bands. Additional work is needed to optimize spatial sampling, spectral range and spectral sampling approaches for the hyperspectral module and to further refine this powerful imager concept.

Imaging spectrometry from geostationary earth orbit (GEO) can provide the frequently-refreshed detailed information on physical properties of earth's atmosphere and surface needed to enable critical new science missions and ultimately improve operation weather forecasting. We describe and evaluate a concept for imaging spectrometry from GEO that addresses both traditional imaging and sounding applications. Our geostationary Wedge-filter Imaging Spectrometer uses spatially variable wedge filter spectrometers to collect earth radiance with approximately 2 km resolution over a 710-2900 cm^-1 spectral range at 1 percent spectral resolution. The resulting instrument, based on LWIR and MWIR wedge-filter spectrometer technology recently developed by Raytheon, would be a compact, rugged imager-sounder with better sensitivity, spectral resolution, spatial resolution and full disk coverage time than current multispectral operational GEO imagers. Sounding performance was simulated with respect to a global database of 119,694 cloud-free samples using a stepwise regression algorithm. Retrieved atmospheric parameters included surface air temperature, surface skin temperature, surface water vapor, total precipitable water vapor, total ozone and vertical profiles of temperature and water vapor. Not only did the conceptual WIS-based instrument outperform the current operation GEO sounder, but also RMS error performance approached that of advance higher spectral resolution sounders. Due to its higher spatial resolution and more compete spatial coverage, WIS could achieve this high quality cloud free sounding performance roughly two times more frequently than high spectral resolution advance sounders. Combining this new technology with proven wedge spectrometer approaches for visible and near-IR wavelengths would provide imaging-sounding data from GEO with unprecedented detail and fidelity for a wide range of weather, climate, land use, ocean color and other earth science studies.

GWIS sounding performance was simulated by evaluating retrieval performance with respect to a global database of 119,694 cloud-free samples using a stepwise regression algorithm. Retrieved atmospheric parameters included surface air temperature, surface skin temperature, surface water vapor, total precipitable water vapor, total ozone and vertical profiles of temperature and water vapor. In all cases, GWIS outperformed the current GOES sounder. Furthermore, GWIS RMS error performance approached that of advanced higher spectral resolution sounders (e.g., 1.2 K/1 km for GWIS versus 1 K/1 km for advanced sounders). Due to its higher spatial resolution and more complete spatial coverage, GWIS achieves this high quality cloud free sounding performance roughly two times more frequently than high spectral resolution advanced sounders. Combining this new technology with proven wedge spectrometer approaches for visible and near-infrared wavelengths would provide imaging- sounding data from GEO with unprecedented detail and fidelity for a wide range of weather, climate, land use, ocean color and other earth science studies.
