The rapid proliferation of Multimedia content and the increasing number of transactions through the internet has placed high importance to data/,media security. Digital watermarking, a process of embedding secondary digital data in the primary digital medium, is one of the common methods used for copyright protection. In this paper, we propose a technique for robust and invisible watermarking of sprite in MPEG-4. Sprite coding is a new scheme proposed in the MPEG-4 standard for encoding the background in a scene which have less or no local motion. There are three steps involved in the generation of sprites - Initialization, Updating and Blending. The sprite is initialized for the very first Video Object Plane(VOP) of the video object sequence by just placing the VOP at a pre-specified location within the sprite. The sprite is then updated for each of the subsequent VOPs of the video object sequence by estimating the motion of the VOP with respect to the sprite. The VOP is then warped by the estimated motion parameters. The warped VOP and the sprite are then blended together. The blending factor may be different for different pixels on the sprite and this is a function of the number of times this pixel has been blended in the past. The details of the proposed watermarking technique are as follows. The contents of the sprite are first classified as strong texture, smooth and edge regions. The pixels in the sprite are then re-classified depending on the number of time search pixel has been blended. A pseudo noise sequence is generated and this sequence is modulated with the image using the basic sequence amplified according to an apriori classification and pixel blending weights. Abstraction of the watermark is done by demodulating the sprite with the same pseudo-noise sequence. Provisions for extracting the watermark from the individual frames have also been provided. The International Standards Organization (ISO) has proposed a family of standards for compression of image and video sequences, including the JPEG, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. The latest MPEG-4 standard has many new dimensions to coding and manipulation of visual content. A video sequence usually contains a background object and many foreground objects. Portions of this background may not be visible in certain frames due to the occlusion of the foreground objects or camera motion. MPEG-4 introduces the novel concepts of Video Object Planes (VOPs) and Sprites. A VOP is a visual representation of real world objects with shapes that need not be rectangular. Sprite is a large image composed of pixels belonging to a video object visible throughout a video segment. Since a sprite contains all parts of the background that were at least visible once, it can be used for direct reconstruction of the background Video Object Plane (VOP). Sprite reconstruction is dependent on the mode in which it is transmitted. In the Static sprite mode, the entire sprite is decoded as an Intra VOP before decoding the individual VOPs. Since sprites consist of the information needed to display multiple frames of a video sequence, they are typically much larger than a single frame of video. Therefore a static sprite can be considered as a large static image. In this paper, a novel solution to address the problem of spatial scalability has been proposed, where the sprite is encoded in Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). A lifting kernel method of DWT implementation has been used for encoding and decoding sprites. Modifying the existing lifting scheme while maintaining it to be shape adaptive results in a reduced complexity. The proposed scheme has the advantages of (1) avoiding the need for any extensions to image or tile border pixels and is hence superior to the DCT based low latency scheme (used in the current MPEG-4 verification model), (2) mapping the in place computed wavelet coefficients into a zero tree structure without actually rearranging them, thereby saving allocation of additional memory. The proposed solutions provide efficient implementation of the sprite coder making possible a VLSI realization with a reduced real estate.

The recent audio-visual standard MPEG4 emphasizes content- based information representation and coding. Rather than operating at the level of pixels, MPEG4 operates at a higher level of abstraction, capturing the information based on the content of a video sequence. Video object plane (VOP) extraction is an important step in defining the content of any video sequence, except in the case of authored applications which involve creation of video sequences using synthetic objects and graphics. The generation of VOPs from a video sequence involves segmenting the objects from every frame of the video sequence. The problem of object segmentation is also being addressed by the Computer Vision community. The major problem faced by the researchers is to define object boundaries such that they are semantically meaningful. Finding a single robust solution for this problem that can work for all kinds of video sequences still remains to be a challenging task. The object segmentation problem can be simplified by imposing constraints on the video sequences. These constraints largely depend on the type of application where the segmentation technique will be used. The purpose of this paper is twofold. In the first section, we summarize the state-of- the-art research in this topic and analyze the various VOP generation and object segmentation methods that have been presented in the recent literature. In the next section, we focus on the different types of video sequences, the important cues that can be employed for efficient object segmentation, the different object segmentation techniques and the types of techniques that are well suited for each type of application. A detailed analysis of these approaches from the perspective of accuracy of the object boundaries, robustness towards different kinds of video sequences, ability to track the objects through the video sequences, and complexity involved in implementing these approaches along with other limitations will be discussed. In the final section, we concentrate on the specific problems that require special attention and discuss the scope and direction for further research.

Image and Video indexing is becoming popular with the increasing volumes of visual information that is being stored and transmitted in various multimedia applications. An important focus of the upcoming MPEG 7 standard is on indexing and retrieval of multimedia data. The visual information can be indexed using the spatial (color, texture, shape, sketch, etc.) and temporal (motion, camera operations, etc.) features. Since multimedia data is likely to be stored in compressed form, indexing the information in compressed domain entails savings in compute time and storage space. In this paper, we present a novel indexing and retrieval technique using vector quantization of color images. Color is an important feature for indexing the visual information. Several color based indexing schemes have been reported in the recent literature. Vector Quantization (VQ) is a popular compression technique for low-power applications. Indexing the visual information based on VQ features such as luminance codebook and labels have also been recently presented in the literature. Previous VQ-based indexing techniques describes the entire image content by modeling the histogram of the image without taking into account the location of colors, which may result in unsatisfactory retrieval. We propose to incorporate spatial information in the content representation in VQ-compressed domain. We employ the luminance and chrominance codebooks trained and generated from wavelet-vector-quantized (WVQ) images, in which the images are first decomposed using wavelet transform followed by vector quantization of the transform coefficients. The labels, and the usage maps corresponding to the utilization pattern of codebooks for the individual images serve as indices to the associated color information contained in the images. Hence, the VQ compression parameters serve the purpose of indexing resulting in joint compression and indexing of the color information. Our simulations indicate superior indexing and retrieval performance at a reduced computational complexity. Performance analysis over a variety of color images using the proposed technique and other competing techniques in the literature is presented in the paper.

The transmission of video over variable bit rate channels is a challenging problem. The requirements for an acceptable video quality are typically negotiated between the application layer and the network. The encoder of a variable bit rate video application can adjust several of its parameters to meet the requirements of the network. The main aim is to decrease the loss, delay variation. Network resources have to be properly assigned to meet a required service request. Network buffers need to be controlled carefully, since buffers are responsible for delay and loss distribution. On the other hand, during video transmission, the state of buffers at the encoder output, and decoder input are also very important. Since a buffer overflow or underflow indicates inappropriate resource distribution, it is essential to know when and how buffer overflow and underflows occur. The proposed research is based on the encoder and decoder buffer boundary definitions introduced in Nguyen et al. 97. The bit rate of the video is adjusted so that the encoder and decoder buffers neither overflow or underflow at any instance during the transmission. This is guaranteed by estimating the state of the decoder buffer at a fixed frame rate, which in turn is derived for the variable channel rates for the duration of transmission. Both the encoder and decoder buffer fullness information is used as a feedback to the encoder. The encoder, upon receiving this state information adjusts the bit rate for the subsequent frames. This research uses the analytically proven boundaries for the variable bit rate encoder and decoder provided and the behavior is simulated using several video sequences. Simulation results provide a better understanding of the boundary definitions and their practical applications. In addition to understanding the dynamic behavior in terms of the bit rates, this investigation also addresses the impact of the changes in the frame rate and other scalability factors controlled by the encoder. The results show that the boundary definitions, which in turn are used for rate control of the encoder and decoder, improve the quality of the video received.

SC085: Video Indexing, Browsing, and Retrieval

Interactive television, video over Internet, digital libraries, and video games extensively use visual media. A key requirement is efficient access to the stored visual information. This course introduces image and video indexing, browsing and retrieval. It reviews the state-of-the-art techniques for content-based image indexing, video partitioning, camera operation detection, and visual representation of the video content. Several image and video examples are presented to help understand the concepts and techniques discussed in this course.
