By combining two MOF-based FBG sensors, we demonstrated three-dimensional strain-based monitoring of the curing of a fiber reinforced composite subcomponent manufactured by a resin transfer molding (RTM) technique. We also investigated the influence of the presence of the embedded fibers by embedding the MOF in composite coupons manufactured by liquid resin infusion (LRI) and performing a multitude of mechanical tests with these coupons and comparing the mechanical resistance to pristine coupons. It is also the first time that such a comparison has been carried out for this specific combination of optical fiber and composite material system.
In this work, we report on the quantitative investigation of the repeatability and reliability of FBG-based bearing fault detection. We document the influence of the installation of the fiber on the bearing on the acquired strain signals, and the impact thereof on the selection of an adequate damage indicator. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that such an extensive study has been carried out in view of quantifying the repeatability and reliability of FBG-based fault detection in bearings.
Compact wide field-of-view camera design for remote sensing of the Earth’s emitted thermal radiation
In this experiments, two MS-FBG sensors were placed in a hydrogen test chamber: one with its fiber end sealed for pressure sensing and the other with its fiber end kept open for referencing purposes. It could be demonstrated that both sensors show a similar wavelength shift after some time and that due to the hydrogen diffusion, the pressure in the airholes of the sealed MS-FBG sensor equalizes the hydrogen pressure in the chamber. Furthermore, it could be demonstrated that the refractive index seen by the waveguide of the fiber is also affected. Based on all these observations, the influence of the hydrogen on the temperature and pressure measurement performance of the MS-FBG sensor is estimated, and a mitigation scheme that partially compensates for this influence is discussed.
ESTEC has initialised an R&D program with the aim of establishing a comprehensive data base gathering radiation sensitivity data, called Dose coefficients, for all the glass optical parameters (transmittance / refractive index / compaction……). The first part of this study, to define the methodology for such a data base, is run by ASTRIUM SAS in co-operation with SCK CEN. This covers theoretical studies associated to testing of a selected set of classical and "radiation hardened" glasses.
It is proposed here to present first the theoretical backgrounds of this study and then to give results which have been obtained so far.
